![]() | Based on Patricia MacLachlan's novel which won the prestigious Newbery Award, given to the author of the year's finest children's book. Jacob, (Walken) a widowed father, still mourning his wife's death, decides to place an advertisement for a new wife, for his own sake and for his two children. Sarah, (Close) a "plain and tall" woman from Maine answers. She promises to stay for a trial period of thirty days to see if she can "make a difference" for this family. Jacob must overcome his sorrow in order to allow Sarah into his life. Sarah must overcome homesickness and learn the ways of prarie life. When I first saw this screen adaptation for Sarah, Plain and Tall, I was so taken aback by the emotional power of these two wonderful actors. Walken and Close's chemistry is something that I do not see too often on screen. To this day, even after seeing this film many times, it still touches me. It's a sweet and adorable story of hardship and love. The sequel, Skylark also moves me and is beautifully filmed. Soon, the third installment of this wonderful story, called Winter's End will be filmed with the same cast and director. It is certain to be equally as touching. |
